Crater ascent is closed due to high volcanic activity
Rincón de la Vieja National Park is one of the country’s most spectacular natural destinations, perfect for those seeking adventure, a connection with nature, and a unique experience in a volcanic setting. Part of the Guanacaste Conservation Area, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers approximately 14,084 hectares. This park is renowned for its biodiversity, volcanic activity, and cultural and historical significance.
The park is home to the imposing Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, an active stratovolcano standing at 1,916 meters above sea level. It has several peaks, with its main crater being one of the most prominent attractions. From the summit, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the region and, on clear days, even the Pacific coast.
The park is famous for its active volcanic manifestations, such as:
- Fumaroles: Emissions of steam and gases that emerge from the ground.
- Mud pots: Bubbling mud pools caused by geothermal activity.
- Hot springs: Natural hot water pools, perfect for relaxing after a hike.
The park hosts different ecosystems, ranging from tropical dry forests to lush rainforests. Some of the most notable species include:
- Flora: Ceiba trees, guayacán, orchids, and bromeliads.
- Fauna: Howler monkeys, toucans, coatis, jaguars, pumas, and various species of butterflies and frogs.
Rincón de la Vieja offers several trails that allow visitors to explore its biodiversity and geological wonders. Some popular trails include:
- Las Pailas Trail: A 3 km loop where you can see mud pots, fumaroles, and local flora.
- La Cangreja Waterfall Trail: Leads to a spectacular crystal-clear waterfall.
- Crater Ascent: For adventurers, the trail to the crater offers an unforgettable experience.
The park gets its name from a Chorotega indigenous legend about a woman named “La Vieja” who, according to the story, lived near the volcano and had mystical powers. This volcano and its surroundings were also considered sacred by local indigenous cultures.
Visitor Hours: Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Closed on Mondays.
